Oracle has responded to the "Apache Killer" vulnerability, which affects several Oracle products such as Oracle Application Server and Oracle Fusion Middleware because of their implementation of Apache. Oracle, as a precautionary measure has issued a patch in advance of the scheduled Critical Patch Update on October 18, 2011. Oracle recommends that all affected customers apply the fixes provided by Security Alert for CVE-2011-3192 in order to maintain their security in depth posture.

One approach to security that has become standard practice within the past decade is the deployment of reduced or minimal configurations of Oracle Solaris in the assumption that if software is not installed it cannot be re-enabled or exploited, or at least not easily. Glenn Brunette's blog on the subject includes recommendations for creating such reduced configurations for security reasons and to reduce the management burden and costs associated with instance provisioning, patching, migration, and audit compliance.

Six of Oracle's Sun Fire X4800 M2 servers, Oracle Solaris 10 and Oracle Database 11g Real Application Clusters (RAC) software delivered an SAP enhancement package 4 for SAP ERP 6.0 (Unicode) Sales and Distribution - Parallel (SD Parallel) Benchmark result of 134,080 users as of 09/12/2011. Oracle announced that Oracle FLEXCUBE Universal Banking 11.2.0 has received the SWIFTReady Payment Label 2011. The SWIFTReady label identifies products that demonstrate compliance with SWIFT standards, messaging services, and connectivity; integrate efficiently in the SWIFT environment; increase traffic automation; and support straight-through processing (STP).
SWIFT, which supplies secure messaging services and interface software to wholesale financial entities, runs an annual program for determining the SWIFT-compliance of third-party software applications for the financial services sector.

An update to Oracle Solaris 11 Express that contains all the features expected to be part of Solaris 11 is now available to download on the Oracle Tech Network, blogger Constantin Gonzalez writes. Users will need to accept the special OTN Early Adopter License and join the OTN program, according to Gonzalez, who writes that the release notes cover known issues, numerous ways of installation, and a list of obsolete packages and new packages since Solaris 11 Express 2010.11.

Oracle has published an update to the Processor Core Factor Table, according to a blog post by Stefan Hinker. This update lists the still unreleased T4 CPU with a factor of 0.5, which leaves the license cost per socket the same compared to T3 while putting T4 in the same league as SPARC64 VII+ and all current x86 CPUs. A later announcement is expected that will provide performance details, although this core factor seems to confirm that T4 will deliver on Oracle's performance claims.
